March 29 2016 – Lye Creek Burn

Smiths Longspur3On our trip home from Prophetstown State Park today, we swung by Lye Creek Burn in Montgomery County to see if we could find the Smith’s Longspur.

Fortunately Clint Murray was there with his scope and before too long, we were seeing dozens if not hundreds of the Smith’s Longspurs. We knew they were there, but didn’t know exactly what to look for. Clint is passionate about this property and maintains it for prime Longspur habitat. He is very knowledgeable about the habits of the Longspurs so he was able to help us find them and easily id them. Hopefully we’ll remember this for next year. We have missed seeing them for the past 4 or 5 years.

This is a great place to visit.
